55 Word Challenge
Week Seventeen
Welcome back to the #55WordChallenge. No special judge this week, (again) so you are stuck with me. Mua ha ha. And I’ve got some great pictures for this week too! So get ready to write and get your creativity flowing.
For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.
The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titillating, not obscene. I know that can be done and done well.
The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner. If you don't want to list your email address, send it to me at jezri@writing .com. I promise I won't distribute it, but if you are the winner I need a way to notify you and to send you your prize.
And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon or from Barnes & Noble. (The prize will be rewarded within a week and sent to your email.)
Photo Prompt:
Okay, most important, have fun!
Shameless Promo:
Flashes From the Grave, Tales of Terror and Psychotic Mumblings are 50% off all month on Smashwords. Use coupon code SSW50 with both at checkout.
Also, my work can be found at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and now Kobo, as well as Smashwords.
Vegeance
ReplyDeleteMisty dusk falls. The road has been long and I am weary. I have followed his trail for weeks and my destination is in sight at last. He doesn’t know I survived, but he soon will. There are no neighbors nearby to hear his screams. Soon I will punish my mate’s killer. Vengeance ero mei.

Marie gaped in horror from the hill. When she’d found the old tome at the used bookstore, she didn’t think anything of reading the weird nature poems aloud. By candlelight, during the full moon, while burning incense. Now she could barely see the sign.
ReplyDelete“Don’t just stand there, Marie. Hand me another sandbag!”

Nice...I like it! Couldn't think of anything for that one.
DeleteAnger swallowed her, giving her the strength to hold her wolf-form. Head down, shaking from hunger and thirst, she pressed on; the need for revenge growing with every step.
ReplyDeleteDid they really think she'd let him go? She'll find them no matter how long it takes.
They'd regret taking her son, but not for long.

Iara sighed as she glanced down Main Street. This was the last time the town would ever need the ‘flooded’ sign.
ReplyDeleteThe old, wizened woman told her to go to the mountain. There she would discover the reason why it always rained on her birthday. Perhaps then she could change this curse into a gift.

Leaving the pack had been hard. The diminishing wilds were the place for wolves, but Bluebelle’s path drew her into the ever encroaching folds of civilization. Even out on the moors men had made fences and cottages to tame their mother.
ReplyDeleteThe druid sensed her blood sisters’ peril, and knew she had to go on.

She sat, head to one side and purred. Last time she’d asked for the moon it had been a full moon and after he’d stretched for the luminous reflection he’d emerged both saturated and humiliated, not a good combination for a cat. So this time she was just happy he still reached for the impossible.

Damned hick called me yeller, I rage with an unfurling growl. Assholes shouldn’t insult strangers; it’s dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI tracked him to a lonely farmhouse. Such easy pickings.
As I burst through his door, splintering it, the stench of his fear tempers my anger. I could turn him instead, but he’s not worthy.
Besides, I’m hungry.

SAFE HOUSE
ReplyDeleteThe mist of dawn covered the house in a shroud of silence.
This was when Lisa felt the safest, when the baby’s noise didn’t send her running to the peepholes to check for walkers. At the end of the road, a wolf yipped twice.
The all-clear signal.
“Daddy’s home!” She coed at the baby.

A salt mine ravished my throat. All I could think about was the water enveloping the buildings and near to gobbling the street sign whole. It was all surreal as salted water scratched within my lungs.
ReplyDelete“Come back to me.”
I gasped rolling off the couch onto the rough floor water spewing from my mouth.

They say the water is starting to recede. The rush of the water makes that hard to believe, but I suppose it has to be rushing somewhere. Rushing, and taking with it everything I’ve ever known, ever cared about - even Marian. I think I’ll find a different road. Start over somewhere else, without the memories.

I'm the cat that hung the moon, crooned the tom holding court outside her window, that little mice nibble back into the gloom.
ReplyDeleteHe wasn't of course; the Cat of Stars was black as night, not ginger tabby with handsome white paws. But he was here-- the stars were not.
Tell me more, she sang.

DINNER
ReplyDeleteToo tired to change. Too hungry to care.
Rain is about to fall.
Best hole up just ahead for the night.
Get some grub. Get some sleep.
They can’t move her much further tonight.
Scent will be fresh come dawn. I’ll get her back.
Hard fight ahead. Must stay strong.
Hope dinner isn’t too skinny.

Love, love, love the last line. Seriously LOL!
DeleteThank you!! Used a half dozen words trying to be more subtle but when I typed in 'skinny', I knew that was the ONE!! :)
DeleteEverybody remembers the day of the flood. Six feet of water everywhere in town. We’re still recovering from that. At least Billy and his buddies made the best of it. Came up with a grand idea. We all sat on our roofs, and watched the towns first ever boat racing championship on Main Street.

I lifted my delicate paw to Luna, my slender mistress in the sky. She grew with each passing day.
ReplyDeleteSoon, I thought, turning to the man sleeping peacefully in bed.
Soon Luna would be full and I would be transformed. He would think me beautiful and he would love me.
I purred at the moon.

Love, love love this turn on the story. Great job!
DeleteWhiskers twitching, he batted at Bright Thing.
ReplyDeleteBright Thing refused to catch in his claws like all the other things did, the yarn, the little birds, the shiny keys that set the humans yowling.
Bright Thing danced near, laughing, danced away.
Still he batted, purring faintly.
He’d caught her once; he could do it again.

I sat on a car for at least nine hours. After that, my cell died. The water was scariest in the night, when the waves were only shrugging walls of shadows, reaching for my torn sneakers. But in the daylight, it was tragic. Everything I’d known was washed away, swallowed by dark mouths, like me.
