55 Word Challenge: Week Forty-Four

55 Word Challenge
Week Forty-Four

Welcome back to #55WordChallenge!
For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here. (List has been updated)
The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titillating, not obscene. I know that can be done and done well.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner. If you don't want to list your email address, send it to me at
jezri@writing.com. I promise I won't distribute it, but if you are the winner I need a way to notify you and to send you your prize.

And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. This week I have a special prize, thanks to a donation by @HLPauff. He deferred his prize two weeks ago and said to put it back in the pot. So I have decided to offer all three books by Timothy Hobbs as the prize package. I am really excited because I love Tim's writing and I think you will too. You can read more about him below.
If anyone is interested in contributing a prize, a book, cover art, whatever you want, let me know and we will work something out. If you are an artist that would like to have your work featured, let me know!

Photo Prompt:

Timothy C. Hobbs was born in Temple, Texas. His older brother was a lover of horror movies and literature. Tim naturally followed his brother's lead and was seduced by all things that go bump in the night. Tim started writing horror stories in the sixth grade and has never stopped since.

His books, Music Box Sonata and The Smell of Ginger, are published through Visionary Press Cooperative. A third novel, The Pumpkin Seed, will be released sometime in the near future.

Timothy also writes for Minor Insanity.

Winner 55 Word Challenge Week Forty-Three

Honorable Mentions:

@Angelique_Rider’s story put a vivid image in my mind. I love the picture it created.
@PurpleQueenNL Wow! Again, great image and the ending gave me chills.
@bullishink I’ve been to Summerville, (Georgia). They seemed like such friendly folk to me, but perhaps not.

Winner:

@Klingorengi:

As a rule, I never choose Jeff for the win because I feel I may be biased and I don’t want the challenges integrity to be questioned…  however I loved this and after much deliberation I decided it was in fact my favorite and not fair to leave him out of the running. Here is the story, which included all 3 photos and was done so seamlessly.

Teddy's Travels

Having no idea when a train might come along, he’d turned from the tracks and chosen the road instead.

His walking stick clacking on the rails of an old fence, he never heard the truck as it crested a low hill.

Striking him, it continued on its way, leaving him broken, dying and alone.

54 words @klingorengi

Thank you everyone and see you back next week, when we will have a special prize package!

Did you ever wish you had the ability to use magic and cast spells to do anything you wanted to? Well, so does Keldane. Unfortunately, just being the son of the most powerful magic user the world has ever known doesn’t come with any guarantees. It’s not without very good cause he’s known to his classmates as Keldane the Cursed.

Week Forty-Two

A lot of great entries this week. Thank you everyone!
Honorable Mentions:
@tollykit:  I can imagine this actually happening.  Aliens perhaps.
 CM Stewart: Great image!
Interesting. We had a power outage over the summer that took out most of Lima for a week. I don’t think they lost power at all. Of course I am sure there are backup generators backing up the backup generators… nothing to do with an alien takeover.
Winner:
@HLPauff: And it could be called The Monster from Hog Creek. I loved it.
How could he have known? The water seemed clear enough and it was sweltering outside. A dip couldn’t hurt, right?

Green scales appeared first, spreading across his skin. Next, his body swelled and his shadow grew. Before he knew it, he had destroyed the refinery and rampaged through the old train yard, an unstoppable monster.

See you all next week! If you have any photos you would like to donate for prompts or are interested in judging, please let me know.  J

Lima was once a train town in its hayday.

The oil refinery lights us the sky at night. You should see the flame.

And of course our river walk. You will need to hold your breath and don't even think about going for a swim. Your skin may never recover.

Winner 55 Word Challenge: Week Forty-One

Winner 55 Word Challenge
Week Forty-One

Another great week and another tough decision. I went back and forth several times.
Honorable Mentions:
@SiobhanMuir: I liked the dark, desperate feel of this. Broken promises and the inability to break free.
@LastKrystallos: Nicely written. I especially liked the last line.
@Klingorengi: All three prompts and nicely done.
Winner:
@solimond: Loved this! I almost feel bad for the guy.

“HA! I finally got you. You can’t move, can you? The chains have iron.” The man was smug. “Now give me your gold.”

Tamsil rolled his eyes, looking down at the chain wrapped around his bare feet. “I told you. I’m not a leprechaun. Idiot.” He gave a shark toothed grin. “But come closer, please.”
Okay, that's it for this week! If you are looking for something to write in the meantime, check out Motivation MondayTuesday Tales, Thursday Threads and  Friday FrightsMonday Mixer should be returning this week.
Also check out the 12th Night Masquerade Flash Fiction Contest. It ends tomorrow, so you need to hurry.

We had some new comers this week and a lot of great entries. This wasn't an easy decision but I have finally narrowed it down.
Honorable Mentions

@LupusAnthropos: Made me laugh. Enough said. ;-p
@ChuckWesJ: Love the imagery. Would work great as a longer story.

Cmstewartwrite:  The story has such a desperate feel to it. I picture a scared little girl calling through the door.
Winner:
"Temporal Finale."

Dark clouds roiled, illuminated by the hidden moon, though the air was still. Color was gone in the lunar light and the silence was palpable, a shroud cloaking the world. A sharp crack murdered the silence as the last raven took flight among the bare, reaching branches. That lonely sound marked the end of time.

Congratulations! DM your email address to me so I can send you the gift card. Also feel free to snatch the winners badge at the top of the page.
Thank you everyone that entered! See you all next week. :)
