55 Word Challenge: Week Thirty-Eight

55 Word Challenge
Week Thirty-Eight

Welcome back to #55WordChallenge. This week I am the judge, jury and executioner.

For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.

The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titillating, not obscene. I know that can be done and done well.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner. If you don't want to list your email address, send it to me at jezri@writing.com. I promise I won't distribute it, but if you are the winner I need a way to notify you and to send you your prize.

And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. (The prize will be rewarded within about week and sent to your email.) Also, I will be offering a monthly prize to the story I liked the best between the winners. That will be announced at the end of the month who gets this. (I will announce last weeks winner Friday, but there will be a delay in delivery. I have to order more and that takes a few weeks for delivery.)

If you are an artist that would like to have your work featured, let me know!

  1. My world had faded into a monochromatic blur, but she stood out in glorious color as she waited for the train. She turned her head and nodded, the only one to notice me.
“Excuse me, miss. Do you have the time?”
“Of course.” At her shy smile, I knew I’d found the one

  2. Let there be Light

She surveyed the Norman Rockwell scene with tolerant disdain. She was the rightful mistress of this place. All who lived here knew her, the oldest living resident. Even the young ones treated her with respect. She lived in harmony with Gaia and no natural enemies threatened her. But chainsaws were not natural. Her leaves shivered.

  3. The Seekers

She could hear the sound of footsteps closing in on her hiding spot. Their splish-splash through the puddles echoed off the walls of the claustrophobic alley she’d found.

Staying silent, she crouched further down into the shadows, hoping it would be enough to evade their capture.
    Closer. Ever closer they approached.

    “Gotcha, Selena! You’re it!”

  4. Tommy stopped in his tracks. A light had appeared in the alleyway where there had only been darkness. This was NOT good. Scared and beginning to tremble, Tommy hoped he wouldn't wet his pajamas from the fright.

His mother would probably say that it served him right: young monsters shouldn't be wandering through bright alleys.

  5. “Bright” he used to call her, as if Bright were some derogatory name.

She always wished it was because she was colourful not just clever; she yearned for him to notice her.

Years later she still watched him on the daily commute but despite her bright orange hair, he always walked straight past, still oblivious.

  6. Hunting

A hunter, from a generation of hunters, she allowed herself a treat once in a while. The chance to play the victim, giving those she hunted the chance to become a hero before death. Staggering down the alley, cold, wet and pissed off, she hoped her hero would turn up soon, this game grew tiresome.

  7. I looked up, having no recollection of how I ended up in the dank alley. I only knew that I needed to leave. I got up, dusted myself off and made my way toward the light. I was trapped by the time I heard the car horn. I lay down and waited for the light.

  8. “That doesn’t look good.”

The sun was still low in the east, illuminating the eastern faces of the houses and trees. To the west, pitch black clouds. The contrast was striking. The image on my weather radar showed the approaching F6 tornado.

I wondered how many of us would survive.

    Our apocalypse was here.

  9. THE COMMUTE

    Bag. Watch. Sunglasses.

Lola never had any trouble getting up in time for the morning commute from her suburban home into the dirty winding city. Remembering what she needed to take or do was another story.

Her combination of punctuality and forgetfulness always surprised people. Lola made it work.

Unfreeze time! That’s what she forgot.

  10. As the train pulled into the station, fear twisted my stomach and doubts raced through my mind.

“What if she doesn’t show up?”

“What if she’s really a man?”

Amid the crowd of hundreds, a red haired girl sitting on a bench shined the brightest. My heart started racing and nervous butterflies filled my stomach.

  11. Last night I slept on a train platform. Its comforting rumblings remind me of thunder.

There’s a big suffocating country house I saw once, where its people raced in and out, pinch-faced as their Armani buttons.

I think tonight I’ll sleep in an alley. It’s dark and warm there, with a view of the sky.

  12. Alone

Everything she saw had an indistinct, monochrome quality to it as she walked.

Cutting through alleyways no longer posed any threat and before long she plopped down on a bench in the silent emptiness of the train station.

Who would have imagined her wish for everyone to “just leave me alone” would actually be granted?

  13. The Last Act

The house waited, knowing the end was coming soon.

Makeshift weapons came closer until the sound of hatred closed off any final chance of escape; sticks, pitch-forks, axes all wanted to play their part in the final scene.

She knew they would fail, but at least this time it would be more of a challenge.
