55 Word Challenge: Week Twenty-Nine

55 Word Challenge
Week Twenty-Nine
Welcome back to #55WordChallenge. Today's guest artist is one of my favorites, DaStafiZ. Trust me, he has some amazing art and is the cover artist for Undead Ahead: Zombies, a collaboration between my husband, Jeff Hollar and myself. You are going to love his work.

For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.

The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titillating, not obscene. I know that can be done and done well.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner. If you don't want to list your email address, send it to me at jezri@writing.com. I promise I won't distribute it, but if you are the winner I need a way to notify you and to send you your prize.

And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. The prize will be rewarded within about week or so, (sometimes I run a bit behind) and sent to your email. Also, I will be offering a monthly prize to the story I liked the best between the winners. That will be announced at the end of the month who gets this. (The winner from last month will be announced at the end of this weeks contest.)

If you are an artist that would like to have your work featured, let me know!

  1. “What are you doing, Sebastian?”

    “Looking through the window.”

Lacie sat beside him and looked out at the dusk shrouded trees.

“What window? We’re in the park.”

“The window to Neverland. Right there, just beyond the first star of morning.” He pointed.

Shaking her head, Lacie missed the lantern’s glow through the time tear.

  2. Bitch O' Da Bayou

King Arthur had him his Lady of the Lake. We’s simple folk in these parts and ain’t got us nobody quite so fancy. We calls ‘er the Bitch o' Da Bayou. You drivin’ them back roads at night and you hear her callin’ out foh ya, well you might just best keep you movin’ on.

  3. Return to Wonderland

Alice climbed down the old cellar stairs, even though she’d been warned. Halfway down, she tripped, falling the rest of the way. As she lay there, she could see a rift open in the dim light, a window on the other side, where the dark-eyed Red Queen waited amongst skeletal trees to play croquet.

  4. I looked up. There were so many stairs. It seemed my life was like the medieval basement of some dilapidated castle. Life was so impossible. I placed my hand against the rough brick and considered staying. Darkness hid the true state of everything. I lay down, listless. No. I stood. One step at a time.

  5. TWILIGHT

My name was in lights. My face conjured crowds. My body caused a sensation. I was sought after, fought over, caught up. Studios made millions off me. Actors made careers by dating me. Women spend fortunes mimicking me. But I knew not happiness until the sun set on my youth. Twilight brought me such bliss.

  6. Beauty

Thirteen steps down to the basement
She lies with eyes gazing off to the distance
    Pushed, fallen or simply resting

Cooling skin on a cement floor
Tears pool at the corners of her eyes
    Breath slows as life leaves

Beauty is found where beauty has fallen
    Peaceful in death as life

  7. She knew if she were patient, her time would come. She’d lost track of the days, only knowing by the sunlight on the stairs if it were day or night. Excited, she ran to climb the staircase, slipping on moss near the top. Tumbling down the stairs, she wondered if he’d planned it all along.

  8. “Choose.” I kept hearing that damn voice. Over and over. Endlessly. “Choose.” I kept seeing the picture. A flight of stone steps leading up to heaven. And my Emily lying at the bottom of the steps. She’d fallen. “Choose.”

I picked up my Emily, turned, and walked away. “Heaven would be Hell without you.”

  9. END OF TIME

    “What’s all this?”

“I’m making collages of all the memories that have passed through this place.”

    “That one’s ripping.”

“They won’t hold together! Every time I get close to something good it falls apart!”

“So the sketch book and pencils I gave you weren’t good enough, huh?”

    “I just want something more.”

  10. The old-fashioned lamp glowed beautifully ahead. Curious, Tanta inched closer and saw a brightly lit palace. There were beautiful people smiling, laughing and dancing to a tune she couldn’t hear. Mesmerized, Tanta stepped into the darkness beyond foggy path. Just like that, she was swallowed whole by the night and was never heard from again.

  11. Hello My Lovely

She was a big broad. As big as the whistling willows surrounding my top field and as broad as the colour washed Autumn sky. The breeze from her voice bent the grass and flapped my threadbare cloak. I looked her up and down and decided that eating late season wheat stocks was a bad idea.

  12. The fabric weakened and
    dark and desperate demons
    leapt forward.

    Their leader ripped at
    the flimsy material
    opening a window.

He pressed his eye against it
    hungering for the
    world beyond.

    Horrified he looked away
    from a dying no different to his;
filled with raging fire, smoke and soot.

Man alone succeeded in earth’s destruction.

  13. The only constant was gone, the menacing tick tock of the ancient clock vanished…instead night encompassed the house, and outside sapphire blackness surrounded the pair as they stared in disbelief.
Before them a fissure ruptured, a rent in time, sparkling and mysterious, and the stars beyond winked at them.
    “What are we waiting for?”
