55Word Challenge: Week Forty

55 Word Challenge
Week Forty

Welcome back to #55WordChallenge. We took a break for Christmas but are back now to start the New Year out right!

For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.

The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titillating, not obscene. I know that can be done and done well.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner. If you don't want to list your email address, send it to me at
jezri@writing.com. I promise I won't distribute it, but if you are the winner I need a way to notify you and to send you your prize.

And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. This is usually sent to your email within one to two weeks after winning. If anyone is interested in contributing a prize, a book, cover art, whatever you want, let me know and we will work something out.

If you are an artist that would like to have your work featured, let me know!

Photo Prompt:

  1. "Mommy, Daddy, he followed me. Can we take him home, PLEEEEEEEAAAASE?"

"Well, son, are you SURE you'll feed him, take care of him and clean up after him? Pets are quite a responsibility, you know."

    "Oh, Daddy, I PROMMMMISE! PLEEEEEEEAAAASE?"

"Okay, Mitt, but just remember the mess our neighbors had when they got that donkey."

  2. My first time here - Hello everyone! I chose the second photo, "flying bird in the branches." You can find me on Twitter @ewstorch_nh. Okay, here we go - I call this, "Temporal Finale."

Dark clouds roiled, illuminated by the hidden moon, though the air was still. Color was gone in the lunar light and the silence was palpable, a shroud cloaking the world. A sharp crack murdered the silence as the last raven took flight among the bare, reaching branches. That lonely sound marked the end of time.

  3. The clouds pulse and stir above me as I soar through the air. The branches shake in the surges of cold wind below me but nothing will stop me from my quest. I circle the ground searching. The lightning bursts with bright zagging threads around me. I stand and walk on the ground a man.

  4. The light has come again, one more day. A day I am not sure I even want. No I can't think that way, I have to want this day. I have to embrace it, it’s a chance at life, I will be free, I will see the sun on my own terms, wounds will heal.

  5. My first time - I followed the link on Twitter. 55 words:

Spying the rakes through the window, minerals glistening on the prongs, triggered a rush of memory. She’d awakened to the sound of metal clawing at the ground outside her window. Climbing out of bed she saw him, rake in hand, dragging earth across a rectangular emptiness. In the morning he foretold it was a dream.

  7. RUNAWAYS

D’ya see that bird up there, Chuck? You ever wish you could fly? I do.

Guess it’s the same trouble as this car; we’d have to come down eventually. He’ll always find us.

But we got out of his dingy shed together, and when we grow up he won’t be able to hurt us anymore.

  9. Once a year, she would unlock the shed hoping to find him hard at work, and every year she would find it unchanged from the day of the car crash save a few more cobwebs. She desperately needed the space, but even after twelve years, she feared losing reminders of even the most mundane memories.

  10. His lack of memory, they said it was genetic, an unknown mutation, but there was nothing more they could do. They didn’t want any more experimental drugs, scans and tests; they wanted to try something new.
Nellie had been cheap on the black market, something about the demise of the circus…and since, he never forgot.

  11. Letting Go

Bernard sat next to Stanley watching his father and the harbormaster arranging the passage.

He would miss his new friend terribly but had, reluctantly, agreed there was simply no place in their world for a human child.

Stanley would be much happier among his own kind than in the highly civilized world of the elephants.
