The 55 Word Challenge: Week 10

The 55 Word Challenge
Week Ten

It’s time again for the 55 Word Challenge.  For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.
The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner.
And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. (The prize will be rewarded within a week and sent to your email.)

Photo Prompts:

If anyone is interested in guest judging please let me know, also if you would like to donate a prize for next week’s contest, (or any other week,) let me know. This could be a copy of your book or anything else you want to offer.

Shameless Promo:
Hidden Secrets, Whispered Lies is free through tomorrow night. It is a book of dark poetry.

  1. Memories of screaming came to her as Kara stood looking at the house. The windows she had been pushed up against; the pain inflicted between her legs by the man who was meant to protect her. Hatred filled her, followed by rage, until she fell to the ground in tears. He was dead now thankfully.

  2. She leaned over the railing, cold metal on colder skin. Breathing numbed her insides but the steeled lake and iced air thawed her spirits.
She’d have to stop coming. He’d have to stop calling for her.
She climbed up the wiring and gazed into placating blue.
But wouldn’t it be nice to swim into stillness?

  3. The Reynolds hadn’t figured this in their murder plot. They knew Thomas, their elderly gardener, was filthy rich yet had no heirs. When Mr. Reynolds had discovered they’d been named as primary beneficiaries in his will, they’d acted quickly and dispatched him. But with nobody to attend to their shrubs, his absence became glaringly apparent.

  4. She waltzes down the stairs, hearing the doorbell. She smiles at the man behind the door. She stands next to him as he lifts himself onto his toes to see through the window at the top of the door. Silly, why does he look for her that way, especially when she stands next to him?

  5. “Get back,” I said, practically shoving him away from the staircase.

“What the—get back from the stairs? Is there some new regulation to protect pedestrians from the menace of—stairs?”

“No,” I whispered. “There’s just her.”

    “Who?”

She floated down, an ethereal façade of calm, passing us without notice.

    He shivered in her wake.

  6. Transition

The bridge was a sturdily-built affair with strong planking mated to tubular steel rails. Chain-link fencing added further to the bridge’s pervasive impression of solidity and safety.

Nevertheless, Pietro was powerless to explain the dread he felt.

Charon’s deep voice called out to him, “Anytime today, boy, anytime. Oh, and don’t forget your coin, dammit!”

  7. This time, I chose the second picture.

    "Another photo?"

"Yes, but this one is different."

"How? These fake ghost sightings are all alike: an empty room with a faded image of a person where nobody had been standing."

"But here the girl was real and was standing in an open field. There hasn't been a house at that location for fifty years."

  8. Chose the first pic.

    "At Home"

She ran her fingers over the worn edges of the photo.

She didn’t need to look at it. She’d stared at it for months now, knew every line of the house, every blur of foliage, every wisp of light leak.

It consumed her, absorbing every waking hour and permeating sleep. She’d never escape the house.

  9. The shimmer of light stood there. Sonya froze, hand on the bannister, staring up at the image. A shake of her head and she pinched her nose. She was seeing things. There were no such things as ghosts. Especially the ghost of an old woman who she pushed down the stairs to get the house.
