55 Word Challenge: Week Sixty-Eight

Welcome back to #55WordChallenge!

For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, past contests can be found here. (I am a bit behind in getting this updated.) The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titillating, not obscene. I know that can be done and done well.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner.

And what does the winner get? Besides bragging rights? This badge, which can proudly be displayed on your blog or website. You can even have it tattooed onto your body, but that might be a little weird.

If anyone is interested in contributing a prize, a book, cover art, whatever you want, let me know and we will work something out. If you are an artist that would like to have your work featured, let me know!

I am going to ask for your help with something. I am running a children's summer writing contest on SitNRead called #KidsWrite. It has been a struggle trying to get entries, in fact this past week we didn't have any entries. Can you please help spread the word? Visionary Press Cooperative is offering a $5.00  Amazon gift card every week for winners in 3 categories, but so far it's been a giveaway when we only get one or two entries each week. Tomorrow starts the 9th week and the last month for the contest.

Winner 55 Word Challenge: Week Sixty-Seven

I was going to announce the winners yesterday, but I had a killer headache. It felt like I’d been hit with a sledgehammer right in the middle of my forehead, and by the end of the day, icepicks stabbing me in each of my eyeballs. I swear I think I was the subject of an alien experiment. I spent most of the day in bed, and thank God it was Jeff’s day off, so he could watch the minions for me. I did pull it together enough to write a quick flash last night and then back to bed. But this morning I am feeling refreshed and ready to go. So… here we go.

Honorable Mentions:
@klingorengi: Really pulled at the heartstrings, especially since I am missing my daughter right now.

@by_wjhoward: I always feel sorry for dogs dressed in clothes, so I wouldn’t blame Fluffy for destroying a few shoes.

@lastwordy: Love the description of frost on the face and the smell of winter. I could use a bit of that right now.

Winner:

@SiobhanMuir:  HA! That last line captured the picture perfectly.

Patience

It’s been all of forty minutes, and he said he’d return, but nothing. I watched a stranger walk by and the clouds scuttle across the skyline, but still nothing. Why has he left me? What have I done wrong? He said to stay and be a good girl. Haven’t I been good? Sigh. Waiting.

55 Word Challenge Winners: Week Sixty-Six

I tried to be early this time… even started to post Thursday night, but my computer crashed and my notes were lost. Frustrated I decided to put it off until Friday… and of course I didn’t get back to it. But here we go…

Honorable Mentions
@axelhow: Oooh this one has bite. Love it!
@lissajean7: So sad and yet… it put a shiver through me.
@lejamez: I especially love the last line.
Winner:
@MikeEMillerBook: Wow! This one packs in so much and with quite a punch. Again, loved the last line.

“Will it ever stop, Daddy?” she asked. Her voice was barely audible over cacophony that surrounded us.

“I don’t know, baby,” I answered. In the distance, the eternal fires burned as hotly as ever.

“Will we die?”

I could only squeeze her tiny hand in response. Any answer I gave would feel like a lie.

55 Word Challenge Winner: Week Sixty-Five

Ok, this was not an easy decision, but I finally have made my decision.

Honorable Mentions

@bookwormattack: Ha! I loved the last line. Makes me want to know more.

@PurpleQueenNL: Very disturbing.

@JamesMender: Yikes!

Winner:
@postupak: Wow, how sad.
They lived life between the pages, set their watches according to subtext and the gasps between periods and commas.

“Our door is always open, sweethearts,” they told us. “You will always have a home here.”

Shuttered windows and unanswered calls spoke truer.

“Beloved Father. Beloved Mother,” read their elegant tombstones.

Kids can master subtext too.

Winner 55 Word Challenge: Week Sixty-Four

YIKES! Jeff just pointed out to me that I haven't done this yet and it is almost time to post the next #55WordChallenge. Some computer issues today, but here we go...

Honorable Mentions:

@klingorengi: Great job working in all 3 prompts.

@LupusAnthropos: Hee hee, kitty was very bad.

@SiobhanMuir: Great use of the prompt! Love the idea of a window.

WINNER:

@LastKrystallos: Awesome zombie story! I never would have imagined a cat helping a zombie.

We’re a team, Clive and I. Food is scarce when you’re a legless zombie, and not the intoxicated kind either, Smart Alec. Clive brings back food, not a lot, but enough guts and entrails to keep me going…and I, on the other hand, keep him fed, after all, what use did I have for legs?

Okay, now get ready because #55WordChallenge Week Sixty-Five is coming up.

Winner 55 Word Challenge: Week Sixty-Three

It's that time again! Some great entries this past week. They were all great, but in the end I can only pick 4. :( Well, I could pick more, but then where would be the competition?

Honorable Mentions:

@Klingorengi: That always sucks, watching your friends waddle away to their doom. Of course, it's also funny, too.
@nickjohns999: This story is titled, Not With A Bang, but it hit me with a huge blast!.
Shane Woolard: Heh, this one reminded me of a story I've been wanting to write, only reversed. Vampires that adopt human children. Great first entry Glad you could join us.

Winner:

@J_M_Blackman: This story is so sad and captivating. I kept coming back to this when I was trying to decide the winner.

ECHOES

Janice knew she heard Alice's voice in the echoing underground. But it was impossible. Her daughter was gone, months ago—her bloom of youth drowned.

"Mommy."

Janice spun, heel slipping, knee slamming into shining tile. Nothing.

"Mommy."

She tripped one last time, scarf tangled in the escalator.

“Mommy.”

Alice stood at the top, hand outstretched.
