55 Word Challenge: Week Twenty-Three

55 Word Challenge
Week Twenty-Three

Welcome back to the #55WordChallenge. I don’t have an artist lines up this week, so the photos are courtesy of my daughters’, Rylie and Sarah. Rylie is a princess in the making and Sarah… well, she takes after her mama. I feel sorry for the unsuspecting public.

For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.

The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titillating, not obscene. I know that can be done and done well.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner. If you don't want to list your email address, send it to me at jezri@writing.com. I promise I won't distribute it, but if you are the winner I need a way to notify you and to send you your prize.

And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. (The prize will be rewarded within about week and sent to your email.) Also new, I will be offering a monthly prize to the story I liked the best between the winners. That will be announced at the end of the month who gets this.

If you are an artist that would like to have your work featured, let me know!

  1. Masquerade

Who would have ever thought the Masquerade Ball would’ve ended this way? Darla was so excited about her beautiful dress and mask. Todd had picked her up on time and they were soon at the dance. When she’d gone outside for a breath of air, she’d been bitten. Now Todd had been her first meal.

  2. “I’m not going to this. I feel so weird going to this pageant thing. I have to get all dressed up, put on make-up, and you know I don’t like looking like a princess just for anyone. I don’t want to! No! No! No!”

“But Mommy, please? Grammy said you would if I asked nicely.”

  3. THE PROWLER

The frenzied squelching gobbling turned my stomach, and should have turned me away. Unfortunately it was late and I wanted quiet.

My flashlight revealed a woman in sleepwear and Mardi Gras mask emptying my vegetable drawer.

“You’re that prowler! Why hasn’t anyone called the cops on you?”

“Will you?” Her produce stained question answered itself.

  4. She drew the half-mask over her face carefully, just like every day since the Incident.

The mask sparkled with merry greens and yellows, giving others’ horrified eyes somewhere to escape from the raw, burned skin raging across her cheeks.

Maybe if the colors sparkled gaily enough, he would forget he hadn’t yet destroyed her completely.

  5. I look at the picture of my daughter still safe on the surface. I’d never see her grow up. Will she ever know what happened here?

    Please, no.

They’re scratching at the door. They somehow escaped quarantine. I won’t let them eat me alive, and I’m sure as hell not becoming one.

    Push the button.

  6. Mama would be angry if she saw Marissa’s face. The girl smiled in the mirror, adjusting the mask with a stained hand.

What mama didn’t know, wouldn’t hurt her. If she found out, Marissa would have to go back to that smelly old hospital.

She pushed the body under the bed. No one would know.

  7. I was hungry; we both were but all I could find in the area were berries. Smearing the juice around my mouth I waited. I plucked a handful turning at the sound of footsteps.
“You’re holding out on me!” He scrambled eating the berries from my hands.
I wondered; if nightshade would taint his meat?

    2. lol, thank you. I'm just glad I made it in time to join the tales this round. Was just trying to figure out a way of using the picture, keeping the creepy, but not involving blood ^_^

    3. It made me wonder what nightshade DOES taste like. Everybody knows arsenic tastes like almonds. But nightshade...?

    1. That's only 17 words, and I can't tell which photo you based your response on. You still managed to make yours the most disturbing of all the entries, though.
