55 Word Challenge: Week Thirty-One

55 Word Challenge

Week Thirty-One

Welcome back to #55WordChallenge. No guest artist or judge this week, (if you would like to judge or have photos to contribute, let me know) so I will be judge, jury and executioner.

For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.

The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titillating, not obscene. I know that can be done and done well.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner. If you don't want to list your email address, send it to me at jezri@writing.com. I promise I won't distribute it, but if you are the winner I need a way to notify you and to send you your prize.

And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. The prize will be rewarded within about week or so, (sometimes I run a bit behind) and sent to your email. Also, I will be offering a monthly prize to the story I liked the best between the winners. That will be announced at the end of the month who gets this.

If you are an artist that would like to have your work featured, let me know!

  1. Sanctuary?

Vehicles, abandoned for years, look out over hills that seem to promise peace. They lie. Behind them, the lighthouse waits, with its view of the sea. It is my only hope. I climb the circular stairs, pressing my fingers to the rough brick wall. The door at the top is locked. I am finished.

  2. At my villa, he announced I was his Dr. No, his Donkey Kong. We spun bullets in my study and tangoed to the landing. He shouldered my collarbone. The narrow spiral staircase caught my descent quickly. A hidden pistol fired.

I am in my villa. He is in my ocean. Come find me, heroes.

  3. TIME AND TIDE

Grated steps chattered under foot and carefree voices ricocheted off the walls.

“See guys? Was spending the night in the old lighthouse genius or what?”

Dawn broke with gentle warmth over the rocks. Young spirits were high, until they found the decayed husks of their cars.

“Joe, just how long were we down there?”

    “Damn.”

  4. Always Be Prepared

With a sigh, Silas looked downward at the 73 steps between him and the front door.

You’d think after nearly 40 years of Beatrice bitching at him he’d have had the forethought to bash her skull in down below and not up top of the lighthouse.

Grabbing her feet, he started the long trip down.

  5. “I’m getting too old for this,” I thought, standing on the seaweed covered rocks, looking back at the lighthouse. I was terrified of watching another $6000 of camera and lens shatter on the rocks, and wondering if I’d end up spending weeks in a hospital. Sometimes, being a professional photographer just flat sucks.

  6. Liam tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
    Vroom! Vroom!
The engine raced. He knew he had pole position, but it all came down to this race.
    Do or die, buddy.
His dad winked at him from the other rusted car. “On your mark, get set, go!”
Liam roared off in a cloud of imagination.

  7. “Where are you taking me?”

Robbed of sight from the blindfold, Lila’s hands reach out. Touches a curved wall, brick after brick. Clasps a metal pole. Stairs.

    “Just start climbing.”

She can feel the smile on Jordan’s lips as he feeds his whisper into her ear.

Lila smiles into the darkness. Their game has begun.

  8. She fled towards the stairs, and froze as her foot touched the metal steps. “Up or down? Up or down?” The words ran circles around her mind, and images from horror movies swirled through her brain. Fear pinned her to the spot as it reached for her.

They found her there next morning, still screaming.

  9. The rusted junkyard was all that remained of those who had come.

“People are getting smarter. We should dump them in the lake.”

    “We have time.”

“It’s the technology. It will kill us.” The shadow form flickered and glanced towards the pale woman. “Smart phone this, MP3 that.”

    “I’ll think of something.”
