55 Word Challenge: Week Thirty

55 Word Challenge
Week Thrity

Welcome back to 55Word Challenge. Are you ready to write because I have some fun pictures for you today.

For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.

The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner. If you don't want to list your email address, send it to me at jezri@writing.com. I promise I won't distribute it, but if you are the winner I need a way to notify you and to send you your prize.

And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. The prize will be rewarded within about week or so, (sometimes I run a bit behind) and sent to your email. Also, I will be offering a monthly prize to the story I liked the best between the winners. That will be announced at the end of the month who gets this.

Write a Flash Fiction story, 500 words or less, and post it in the comment section here, along with your twitter handle or email address. I need to know how to contact the winners. The story can be any genre, but it must include zombies.

A young woman, Fran, seeks refuge from the cold in an Ohio farmhouse. Wanting to forget the past several months and the horror she has witnessed, she convinces herself that she is safe, at least for the moment. Relaxing and enjoying the winter scene, she falls asleep and wakes to a new nightmare. Soon she learns that what happened at the beginning of the Zombie Apocalypse wasn't the worst of it. There was more to the virus that created the monsters that now ruled the earth. The infection was mutating and what was coming next may mean the end for all those left alive.

  1. I remember the abandoned church in the grounds behind the school. Everyone was convinced it was haunted. Everyone but me. So, I took the dare, and I went inside. I found out, I was right, it wasn’t haunted. At least, not until I met the mad priest and his axe. Now, it’s haunted by me.

  2. Full Metal Treats

Weldon always hated them Halloweens when more kids come ‘round than he had candy to hand out and this weren’t much different. There was way more Shamblers than he had bullets for.

Well ‘til the bastards learned the trick o’ climbin’ stairs to get him, he still had plenty of steel-jacketed treats to hand out.

  3. Well, Saint Peter, I told 'em the first thing the Garcias would shoot when showed up was that tower. They put me in there anyway. And the Garcias shot it full of holes. That’s how I got to these gates. Now can I go in, or was I too sinful when I was alive?

  4. A Little Night Flying

Ignoring the splinters in his knees, Timmy peered into the rafters.
They were here! He had risen at dawn for days, following them a little further each time.
In the gathering twilight, he could hear faint eager squeaks, welcoming him.
They would fly soon. He edged onto the parapet; his dream about to be realised.

  5. Sunlight.

Graham can almost see it though the spires of disease that bristled at his flesh, breaking him down until he was crawling through leaves on the mottled floor.

He doesn’t hear Layla whisper, “Don’t leave me.”

Her words hush with the dense wood of cancer he leaves behind, floating away until he is free.

  6. This is where churches come to die.

Proud weathered hulls drifting on echoes of lost faith, shadows overlapping as they cluster among the gravestones. Memories of wood and stone waiting, yearning, to be counted among the dead.

It's taken me years to learn to see them and a lifetime to learn to sing them home.

  7. Bats in the belfry kept me company as I staked out my target. The hypocritical abusive murderer would get his due. I aimed the rifle, my sites and my sight holding steady. Just a few more steps. My finger squeezed on the trigger. His head exploded in orange, gray, and red.

    My sister is avenged.

  8. The Englishman’s car was no better than Father Yevgeny’s. Alas, renown didn’t come to you out in the Russian hinterlands.

After a pleasant drive across Europe, all that remained was to cross the channel and show Caractacus that he wasn’t the only automotive genius in the world.

Now why was the miracle car listing starboard?

  9. SACRILEGE

The town council pronounced St. Augustine’s too antiquated for use and slated it for the woodpile. The love of my life was cut down in her prime and crafted into its rafters. Will you slay her twice, faithless Judases.? Though I am but a tree, yet I splinter and bleed. Why didn’t they fell me?

  10. Thick, sunless forest gives way to a less dense mass of trees, and blessedly, the sun.

Jimmy has been walking for days with no food, very little water and no shelter save what he made for himself. His clothes are dirty and torn. One shoe is missing a sole.

Weeping, he staggers towards the light.

  11. The building sat alone like us. Once, we were full of life. We were vibrant. The old church was, too. Now, it sits cold. Lifeless.

I run my hand over the curve in Jenny’s belly. She’s not without life. Perhaps we could bring life back to this old relic. Even if just for a moment.
