55 Word Challenge: Week Fifteen

55 Word Challenge
Week Fifteen

It’s time again for the 55 Word Challenge. This week Rebecca Clare Smith, AKA @jocastalizzbeth, and host of #SatSunTails, is judging.  Rebecca is a UK writer of urban fantasy & her county's youngest lollipop lady. Life is reading, writing, 4 cats & 2 Westies..

For those that are uninitiated, the 55 Word Challenge is a contest to write a story in 55 words or less. Not an easy task, but fun and I have been blown away by some of the entries. See for yourself, all the past contests can be found here.

The challenge begins at noon Eastern time every Wednesday and ends at noon Thursday. The story is based on one of three photo prompts and can be written in any genre you choose. My only request is no porn. I don't want to hear graphic details. If it is erotic, make it titilating, not obsene. I know that can be done and done well.

The story is to be posted in the comment section below, along with your twitter handle or email address, so I can contact you if you are the winner.

And what does the winner get? This purty badge for one. For two, a gift card for $5.00 from Amazon. (The prize will be rewarded within a week and sent to your email.)

Photo Prompt:

Okay, most important, have fun!

Shameless Promo:

Bites of Terror contains 5 of my favorite stories from 5 different collections. It is a good sampling of my work for those unfamiliar with what I write. Only .99 cents.

  1. Can I just comment first that I NEED THAT PUPPY? The cuteness is too much.

  2. It sat there, decades later, a silent reminder of all I had lost that day.

The children ran around it, knowing nothing of the sorrow, the blood, the death. Knowing nothing of the innocence I lost so that they could remain.

It sat there, overgrown with trees, a silent reminder of the price I paid.

(And this is not in connection to the most adorable puppy picture ever. FYI.)

  3. “So, where’s this great car?” Jeb followed Earl out of the barnyard.

    “In the field.”

“In the field? Ain’t it rusted?”

    “The chassis’s still sound.”

As they came up the hill, Jeb scowled at Earl. “You said it was a fixer-upper.”

    “Yeah. So?”

“You didn’t say we’d have to cut down a tree.”

  4. Must run.

    Must hurry.

    Smells around me.

    Concrete and brick smell.

    Dirt.

    Don’t stop.

    Gravel beneath my paws, hurts.

    Hot.

    So tired.

    Must keep going.

If I hurry, he’ll be there.

    Waiting for me.

    Not much further now.

    Just around the corner.

    There!

“Tycho! Oh Tycho, I’ve missed you!”

    Boy smell.

    Salty tears.

    Home.

  5. Loved all the pictures and it was hard to choose! Also, this is supposed to be titled "Tycho's Journey".

  6. “I know it’s not customary,” I barked curtly before that cynical feather duster could caw further disdain.

My attention returned to my sanguine bouquet. He’d always given me roses.

Quietly I laid that last bit of color before his stone. What a world, for the dead to leave flowers at the graves of the living.

  7. The biting wind should have chilled her, yet her singular focus kept her from feeling much other than relief. The year was finally over. Her first mission was to throw out all the black from her wardrobe. This time tomorrow she would be wearing deep crimson and not pretending to mourn the man she murdered.

  8. Mouth watering, he races for the corner. Blood pulsing in time with the thought, chicken, chicken, chicken.

He turns the corner and grinds to a halt, sagging to the ground in shock, as he sees his nemesis and an empty bowl.

She licks a dainty kitten paw, and says "cats can teleport, don't you know?"

  9. The snow crunches beneath my feet. Her scream would tear the sky if she understood what she is seeing. I would let her if I understood. My arms enfold her, and at last she knows. It is far too late, and the crimson petals fall noiselessly from her as she gives me her last kiss.

  10. “Look at Pudge, boy. Watch him. Learn.”

Pudge was running across the little play yard, where they let us out of prison once a day. Doing his best to look cute. That dog had lost all his pride.

“He’ll get outta here. Some human’ll see him. Melt. And take him home with ’em.”

  11. Just a spark had been enough; the forbidden spell shredding his veins, scoring his skin.
A mangled corpse lay under earth.
    And Lucifer, all thought.
Foolish humans, not to recognise a mere vessel. Not to check his scalp.
A wicked smile curled her lips as she placed roses on the grave.
    “You should’ve loved me.”

  12. “You always promised to keep me safe,” she whispered before her lips fell into a frown. “I’m not sure where your head was that night, but I suppose you didn’t remember what ‘safe’ truly meant.” She shook her head and placed the red roses on top of the fresh grave. “Consider us even now, Brother.”

  13. His face remained stony when we buried the small pine box under the lightening-split oak. That day the was heat so oppressive even the earth began to steam. Nobody talked about the rope swing Pa had cut down from the bending bough. The old car rusted up eventually. My father never drove it again.

  15. She wore it once a year when she visited him, as a reminder of their wedding day. She laid roses and danced Flamenco round them as they had that day.

She hoped he heard the swish of her traditional black wedding dress as she worked up a sweat – but nothing like the one that night.

  16. The Heart Of A Champion

Emerging into the alleyway, Bruno kicked in a last burst of speed to finish strong. His long sleek legs pumping, his deep chest swelling with air, his whipcord muscles straining, he practically flew across the finish line. Sadly, none of Bruno’s friends had the heart to tell him he was not, in fact, a greyhound.

  17. So impatient, my love, perched upon your tomb and itching for your crown. Did you fear I had failed you? Here is the sacrifice, petals as crimson as platelets. Come now, pierce me with your ivory teeth and cover me with your ebony feathers, beloved, for these days without you have made me bone cold.

  18. “I ain’t seen one of these since I was about six years old.”
    “From the Before Time, Pa?”
    “Yup.”
    “What is it?”
“It was called a Car. Used to take people from place to place.”
“What’re we gonna do with it?”
“Take it apart. Even rusted like that, that metal’s useful against the walking dead.”

  19. The crow stared at her balefully from its perch on the grave marker. A flap of wings, trying to be intimidating as Serra continued to approach, red roses cradled in her arm. The flowers were bright against the gray of the stone. Red lips curled into a grin.

“You went first, dear brother. I win.”

  20. Only thing Grandpa loved more than that car was us. Just seemed right, leaving him in it. Grandpa was so strong. Survived WWII and Korea. Just couldn't beat the cancer. We couldn't leave him in a graveyard to be forgotten. He had to be remembered, enjoyed.

That's why we planted an acorn under his body.

  21. "Worth It"

    ***

“I’m serious, Anna. This will be worth it.”

Anna didn’t say anything to her boyfriend. Somehow, her daddy had already started drinking earlier that morning. Her jaw still hurt.

    “There, in the clearing.”

She looked up and saw it immediately. Like her, it was forgotten, misused, rusted and waiting. The perfect model for her sketches.
